Pedi-Paws for Your Pet: Win One Here!

Many a dog owner has experienced the red marks or even scrapes of their pet's claws, especially after trimming. At this time the claws are at their most destructive condition, with rough edges that can do real damage. This is of particular concern with larger dogs.

Dremel tools have become the way to go for solving these scraping and scratching problems. The problem is a dremel is very expensive for most pet owners. Enter Pedipaws, the alternative to dremel which is much less pricey.

Pedipaws is not as heavy duty as a groomer's dremel tool, so it probably won't be sufficient for "trimming" your lab's heavy nails. There is a way to go about this though, if you are a do-it-yourselfer. After trimming Fido's nails the traditional way with a trimming tool, you can use the Pedipaws to smooth the rough edges, making his claws less destructive for both you and your home.

I worked with Tanner, my Golden Retriever, to see if he would accept my using the Pedipaws on him. My approach was calm, gentle and slow. First I began by leaving it lying around for him to investigate and sniff. Next I started turning it on across the room so he could hear its sound and become familiar with it. By ignoring the noise, I sent a message to Tanner that this object and its buzz were of no concern. He soaked up my non-verbal communication and decided it was nothing to worry about. At one point he even flopped down on the floor next to it while it was running. I figured that was my sign to move forward.

While Tanner lay across my lap, I turned it on and placed it on the floor nearby. When he did not react, I picked it up and held it softly against his shoulder to introduce him to the vibration. At first he pulled back. I ignored this and waited until he relaxed. Then I tried again.

After 5 or 6 tries, waiting for some time between each, Tanner realized there was nothing to fear and allowed me to hold the Pedipaws against his front leg and paw. I immediately gave him one of his favorite treats and told him affectionately what a good boy he is. His ears perked up and suddenly he seemed quite interested in getting acquainted with the Pedipaws.

Nothing Like a Good Snuggle
My next step was to get him used to allowing me to hold the vibrating instrument against his paw pads. I did not press his nails forward until he became comfortable with the Pedipaws on his pads. Each time he allowed this I treated him and we had a warm snuggle. Tanner responds well to food and affection, as does Oliver, who also has been introduced to the Pedipaws. Oliver's claws, however, are like feathers, so I rarely use it on him. It's the big dogs that can really do the damage with sharp nails.

O.k. Tanner's snuggle pose is priceless - I love it! I think my lab Maggie would be ok with me using the Pedipaws on her, but Jenna my dobe - not a chance. Both my lab and by dobe have the very thick nails though so it probably wouldn't work well on either. I'll keep it in mind for my friends though.

Thanks for sharing the review Carrie.

What an adorable snuggle pic!! We just have the groomers do nails...or sometimes the vet. We do not like mama to touch our nails. Well...actually we don't like anybody touchin' our nails!! We have never tried the dremel tool. xoxo Chloe and LadyBug

I agree with "YourOldDog", his pose is really priceless.

I love the way you introduced this tool. I think Kelly would have a difficult time getting used to the vibration and the noise. She doesn't like the blow dryer and is very difficult to get to stay still for any kind of "beauty treatment."

Shiloh will let me do almost anything to him, except trim his nails. He has his done at the vet. But they are very rough when they're trimmed, so I'd like to try the PediPaws just to smoothen the rough edges. He might allow me to do that, as long as I'm not actually clipping. shiloh_acres at yahoo dot com

We trim our dogs nails at home with regular nail trimmers. I've never used PediPaws before and would love to. I have one dog with black nails and because her nails are black they usually stay longer than they should just to be safe. After the trimming her nails are sharp and I would love to use the PediPaws to round them.

I currently take them to get them clipped, Roxy hates nail clippers and freaks out, I have been thinking about doing Molly's myself because he is a lot calmer, Roxy might like the pedi paws better too? Would be nice if she did.

I use a guillotine nail clipper, but mostly I have the groomer do it. If they get too long, I will use human finger nail clippers because those only allow a certain amount of room and it's usually far away from the qwik so I can't hurt them.

I usually take my dogs to get their nails trimed at one of our local fundraisers. There is usually someone there to do it. After a good long walk my dogs are too tired to fight much so its a great way to get them trimmed.

I don't trim my pet's nails. They don't like it. That's why I need to win this giveaway.

I always take my little Pomeranian to a friend of mine to get her nails trim. It's a bit of a hassle not being able to trim her nails myself and I think pedipaws would be perfect for that!

I usually take my 3 little pups to get their nails groomed because I'm afraid of cutting them too short. This would be perfect!

I usually use clippers. This could be a great replacement method!

Currently I use the standard clippers. I haven't tried the Pedi-Paws yet but I would love to see the outcome when they are used.

I use clippers and our dogs are still getting used to it. I've tried pedi paws and I like to use it as a file to smooth the edges after a clipping.
